Today’s Italyis a democratic republic and occupies the 18th place among the most developed economics in the world, with the ninth top quality of life index ranking. Italytakes the important place in cultural, military, and political affairs.  Italyis a founding member of the NATO (more than that, Italyshares NATO's nuclear weapons) and of the EU (European Union). Italyis a current participator of the G20, G8, OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), the WTO (World Trade Organization) and the Council of Europe. There are a lot of headquarters of such worldwide organizations as WFP (World Food Program), FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization), IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development), the NATODefenseCollegeand Global Forum in the Rome.

Italyis the fifth most visited country in the world, with more than 43.7 million foreign arrivals, and possesses an old tradition of superiority in all the sciences and arts, together with the detail that Italyhas the world's record quantity of UNESCO World Inheritance Sites (about sixty percents of the world's art values were found in Italy).

Many centuries, Italycreated the most outstanding cultural works in the western canon, such as frescoes of Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel, Dante’s “Divine Comedy”, Niccolo Machiavelli’s “The Prince” and the neo-realist films of Vittorio De Sica, “The Courtier” of Balthazar Castiglione and Italo Calvino’s post-modernist novels.
