Main sights

• Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra Caves Monastery is one of the must-see sites inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage. Located on a hill overlooking the Dnipro River, Kyivo- Pecherska Lavra Monastery was founded by Antoniy and Feodosiy monks in 1051.  This monastery consists of many churches, towers, and kilometres of underground tunnels with religious objects and old crypts. Several of the most exciting museums of Ukraine are situated here - the Museum of Historical Treasures & Jewellery, the Museum of Miniatures and the Museum of Ukrainian Decorative and Applied Art.
• Sofiysky (St. Sophia's) and St. Michael's Cathedrals. St. Sophia's in 1990 was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This striking architectural monument was built in 1017-31 in honour of Yaroslav the Wise's victory over the Pecheneg tribe. The 1st library of Kyivan Rus was located here. St. Michael's golden-domed Cathedral in the Byzantine style which stands just opposite St. Sophia's - is another significant religious and amazing monument to the undying Ukrainian spirit.
• Khreshchatyk Street and Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) the busiest street in the active capital and the home for many historical buildings, luxurious hotels, restaurants, shops and other attractions. Khreshchatyk is actually a boulevard lined with plenty of chestnut trees. It is fantastic feelings to walk along Khreshchatyk in May when the chestnut trees are blossoming. The “Independence Square” located on Khreshchatyk Street and as the centre of the city performs political and cultural importance.
• Zoloti Vorota (Golden Gate) museum - was one of the 3 main stone gates to the antique city built by prince Yaroslav in 1037. The name "Golden" calls attention to the victorious character of the construction and also referred to the golden cupola of the Church of the Annunciation which was built over it.
• Andriyivskiy Uzviz (Decent) and St. Andrew's Cathedral. From olden times Andriyivsky Decent formed the shortest way between the noble Upper Town and Podil - the merchant's town.  It began from a splendid exemplar of Baroque architecture St. Andrew's church designed by the Italian architect Bartolommeo Rastrelli in 1754,  and ran down to Kontraktova Ploshcha (Square) - the oldest square in Kyiv, dating back to the Kyivan Rus period. The street is often called as Kyiv's Montmartre because of numerous art galleries, studious, theatres, museums, cafes and souvenir shops. You can also find here the old castle, called Richard Coeur de Lion's Castle, and the Memorial and Literary Museum-house of Mikhail Bulhakov.
• St Volodymyr's Cathedral is a splendour church built in 1882 in neo-Byzantine style. Most of the inside paintings of cathedral were done by outstanding artist Victor Vasnetsov and were finished by Mikhail Nesterov.
• Mariyinsky Palace and House with Chimaeras.  Mariyinsky Palace was firstly designed by Bartolommeo Rastrelli in the mid 1700’s as the Kyivan residence of the Tsar’s and now is in use for official and diplomatic ceremonies. House with Chimaeras was built in an Art Nouveau style in 1902 by noted architect Vladislav Gorodetsky, who was considered as the Gaudí of Kyiv. Name of the building was originated from its ornate decorations describing different scenes of exotic animals and hunting. Since 2005 it has been in use as a presidential residence for official and diplomatic ceremonies
• Open-Air National Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life Pirogovo - was opened to the public in 1976. Now the museum numbers over 200 structures brought here from every region of Ukraine and filled with over 40,000 items of fabrics, needleworks, folk costumes, carpets, articles of metal, ceramics, wood, tablewares, musical instruments, paintings, tools, household things and etc. Every year several times during May-November the museum organizes craft days, when visitors can see weavers, potters, blacksmiths, carpet makers, copper and other craftsmen at work. On Sundays folk musicians and choirs arrange concerts of Ukrainian music.
• National Museum of History of Ukraine. The museum has a big collection of ethnographical and archaeological artefacts and includes 8 sections with different parts of Ukraine's history from ancient times to the nowadays. Behind the museum building there is a path that gives fantastic scenery of Podil, from the highest point of Old Kyiv.
• National Museum of Taras Shevchenko was established in 1949 in the former residence of M. Tereschnko. There are 24 halls of expositions containing over 4,000 items such as autographs of Taras Shevchenko, his paintings, drawings, books, photographs and etc.  Kyiv is full of different museums, galleries and exhibitions. There are several which are also worth to visit such as National Museum of the Great Patriotic War, National Museum of Literature of Ukraine, Kyiv Fortress Museum (Kosoi Kaponir), Museum of Russian Art, National Art Museum of Ukraine and etc.
